10 Ways to See the Light on a Bad Day

Everyone has bad days, but the truth is that most bad days can be brightened with some happiness if you know where to find it. While you cannot avoid a bad day, there are things you can do to make them better if you take a few moments to find some good. In fact, a lot of people can turn around bad days just by having a simple routine or approach that lets them escape the feeling.

“There is neither happiness nor unhappiness in this world; there is merely the comparison of one state to the other. Only a man who has felt ultimate despair is capable of feeling ultimate bliss.”— Alexandre Dumas

Here are ten simple suggestions to bring in some light when the day has gone bad. By taking a little action now, you can turn around the bad days and make them productive.

Call a Friend

Nothing can brighten your day faster than calling a friend. Don’t just text them, call and talk to them about what is bringing you down. Be sure not to dwell on the bad news. Instead, just let it out and then turn the conversation to something that you can look forward to doing. You can have lunch, go to a movie, or have a get-together with your friend that will brighten your day. Just the thought of having set a date with your friend can brighten your day immediately, so go ahead and call someone you want to spend a little time with when you are down.

Do a Clean-Up

If you are at your desk, take a few minutes to clean things up and clear them away. There is nothing like the feeling of getting your work area in order so you can start over again. This includes taking out the trash, getting rid of old, useless files, and cleaning out your inbox. By cleaning things up, you are staring over which means you approach the day in a whole new light. If you need to keep some of the emails, put them in an archive folder so you can easily find them. It may not sound like much, but you will be surprised at how cleaning things out will help to brighten your day.

Hit the Gym

Physical exercise is a wonderful way to burn off a bad day. You can walk around the park or hit the gym for a more intense workout. Everyone should have a good, 15-minute high energy workout they can do once they go to the gym or get home so they can transform their bad day into a good one. You’ll feel a lot better when you engage in an exercise routine that burns away the calories and the bad feelings you have for the day itself.

Make a List

List what you are grateful for and why. This is an easy one that takes just a few minutes, but can really brighten up your day. When you see all the things that make you grateful, it will be an automatic mood-booster. When you see just how many things in your life that you are grateful for, it will overcome what is making you feel bad so you can breathe again. So, if you only have a few moments to address your bad day, start by making a list of what makes you grateful.

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” – Eckhart Tolle

Remove Something from Your Schedule

If your bad day is being caused by having too many things to accomplish, then drop one of them. By dropping something, you’ll automatically feel better as you can accomplish the rest of the tasks with less worry. You may think that everything needs to be accomplished today, but keep in mind that if there are too many things to do, you’ll never get them all done anyway. So, sacrifice something so you can achieve the rest.

Play Your Favorite Music

It’s amazing how your favorite tunes can brighten up a bad day. So, go ahead and play a couple of songs to turn your mood around. It’s simple, easy to do, and does not take long, so go ahead and let the music take you away so you can feel better.

Help Someone Out

You can donate something you no longer need or just take some time to help out a person that you’ve never met before. By putting aside your own problems and helping out someone else you do something productive which will help make your day go a lot better. In fact, you may find that the person you help will have their day brightened as well.

Have a Laugh

It is said that laughter is the best medicine, so go ahead and laugh away at things you find funny. You can look up a few jokes, find a funny video, or hang out with someone who you find funny. Whatever it takes to turn around your bad day, laughter is going to be a part of it. What’s interesting is that the anticipation of laughing will brighten your day already, even before you see a funny video, hear a joke, or get with a friend who makes you laugh. You can cut off a bad day quickly when you recognize what is happening and turn it around by having a laugh.

“You take away all the other luxuries in life, and if you can make someone smile and laugh, you have given the most special gift: happiness.” – Brad Garrett

Spend a Few Minutes Alone

You can meditate, have a cup of coffee or tea, go for a walk, or do something that takes you away from everyone else. This is a way to unplug and reset yourself so you can get back to what you were doing and get rid of the bad feelings. You should schedule time for yourself every day so you can recharge.

It’s Time to Begin Again

Did your day not start off right? Well, then start it all over again. If things are not going your way today, stop, take a breath, and start the day again. You have the right to start whenever you want, so if things are sliding downhill, you can just stop and start all over again.

“Every day may not be good, but there’s something good in every day”

Everyone will have a bad day. The trick is knowing how to turn that all around and make it a good day. So, by having a few contingency plans at the ready, you can turn a bad day upside down and make it a memorable one.

“The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything, they just make the best out of everything that comes their way”
